My apologies for the late post today.  It has been a bit of a whirlwind weekend full of last minute flying and driving.  My husband’s grandmother passed away suddenly this Friday past.  Just two months shy of her 90th birthday, she was a force to be reckoned with to the very end.  Ever the indomitable matriarch of the family, she was sharp, warm, kind and made the world’s most incredible pies.  In a nutshell, she was the perfect grandmother and she will be dearly, dearly missed by all who have ever known her.

While it’s sad that it took her death to bring her dozen grandchildren, three sons, daughter and innumerable friends together, we all enjoyed sharing and listening to stories of this remarkable woman’s life all weekend long.  Hours were spent going through shoe boxes filled with her incredible photographs that spanned not just her own history, but that of our nation. There were young girls in front of Model T’s, young men in foreign lands during WWII, pill box hats,  bouffant hair and dozens and dozens of summers spent on Cape Cod.  It was in every sense a celebration of her life and I couldn’t help but think how truly happy she would have been to have everyone together like that.  I am blessed to have known her and thought it only fitting to share the image below – her wedding day in 1948.

I’ll be back tomorrow…maybe a little late as I get back into the swing of things, but I will be back!

So often, words cannot convey what an image can.  Which is precisely how I feel about this hilarious image.  Have a great weekend!

Earlier today, we saw an amazing real wedding from photographer Martha Manning. Martha has been shooting weddings for over 10 years, with much of that work in and around the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.  In talking to her about today’s featured wedding, it dawned on me that this woman has seen A LOT of great weddings, shooting literally hundreds of couples at ceremony and reception venues throughout the area.  As a quiet observer on hand to capture the day, an astute photographer can gleaned a lot about a ceremony and reception location and its staff.  Yet for some reason, photographers really aren’t tapped into as the amazing treasure chest of knowledge that they are.

Well I am doing some tapping!  Over the next several weeks Martha will be joining us on White Thread to feature her six favorite reception venues throughout the Triangle with a real wedding to accompany each.  She’ll share her insights into each location including her favorite spots for some “must take” shots at each.  Should be fun, stay tuned!

A little reminder to not take everything so seriously and enjoy the moment.  Have a great weekend everyone!
